Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA)
A universal antioxidant active in both water- and fat-soluble environments — regenerates other antioxidants and supports metabolic health.
What It Is
Alpha-lipoic acid is unique among antioxidants in that it is both water- and fat-soluble, enabling it to protect cell membranes and intracellular compartments simultaneously. It also regenerates oxidised Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and glutathione — effectively amplifying the entire antioxidant network. ALA has been well studied for neuropathic pain, insulin sensitivity improvement, and heavy metal chelation. Due to compatibility considerations, ALA is administered separately or at the end of the infusion sequence.
What It Does
- Regenerates Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and glutathione after free radical neutralisation
- Improves insulin sensitivity and supports blood sugar regulation
- Chelates heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic)
- Provides neuroprotection for peripheral and central nervous system
- Anti-inflammatory action across multiple cellular pathways
Clinical Considerations
May lower blood glucose — patients on insulin or oral hypoglycaemic agents require blood sugar monitoring. Should be used with caution in thiamine-deficient patients. Due to potential incompatibility with some IV components, administered separately or at the end of the infusion. A clinical assessment is required.
