Inositol
A naturally occurring compound that improves insulin sensitivity and supports mental health and skin.
What It Is
Inositol (specifically myo-inositol) is a naturally occurring polyol that functions as a secondary messenger in insulin signalling pathways. It is highly concentrated in brain tissue and plays a role in neurotransmitter modulation — particularly serotonin and dopamine pathways. Clinically, inositol is best evidenced in the management of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), metabolic syndrome, and gestational diabetes by improving insulin receptor sensitivity. Its anxiolytic properties have been demonstrated in clinical trials for panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive symptoms. It also contributes to skin barrier health via ceramide synthesis.
What It Does
- Improves insulin sensitivity — clinically effective for PCOS, metabolic syndrome, and gestational diabetes
- Supports mental health — reduces anxiety and panic disorder symptoms
- Aids in skin health and barrier function
Clinical Considerations
Generally well tolerated. May interact with lithium — use with caution in patients on mood-stabilising therapy. Not for use during pregnancy without medical supervision. Standard clinical assessment applies.
